This is a very responsible position involving planning, developing, performing, monitoring and evaluating the following components: 1) Serves as a Healthy Homes coach. 2) Case management of children with elevated blood lead levels. 3) Conducts environmental lead investigations of childcare facilities and residences of lead poisoned children according to Miami-Dade County Health Department (MDCHD) Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP) protocol. 4) Keeps detailed countywide reports on lead poisoned cases and provides epidemiological reports to disease control officials. 5) Conducts community outreach.



  • Performs environmental and risk assessments for lead hazards in the community, and prepares reports and compiles data of neighborhood or housing areas which may represent a lead risk. Conducts environmental lead investigations of childcare facilities and residences of lead poisoned children according to MDCHD/CLPPP.

  • Organizes and conducts case management of children with elevated blood lead levels and refers patients and their families to appropriate health care and social service agencies. Interviews, educates, and counsels parents and other family members regarding childhood lead poisoning and its prevention. This often requires making home visits to assess environmental exposures to lead. Maintain and update databases. Makes appropriate referrals and recommendations to families for follow-up visits to physicians, educational referrals, nutritional referrals. Bilingual preferred English, Spanish and/or Creole.

  • Identifies industrial lead hazard sites in Miami-Dade County, compiles and analyzes related data. Keeps a record of county areas that appear to have high lead level concentrations.

This is a team leader within the Epidemiology Section in a large urban county, and shares responsibility with section management for surveillance of disease and investigation of disease outbreaks. There is a wide range of applicable conditions including diseases associated with food/water sources and include novel or emerging diseases, including those related to Bioterrorism and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD). This position will be responsible for coordinating efforts to increase disease surveillance activities by visiting and consulting with physicians and related health care facilities and providing information in reference to the current reporting requirements. The incumbent will be an epidemiology strike team leader in responding to bioterrorism and other WMD events and act as the environmental health liaison to state, county and municipal agencies and advisory groups working on bioterrorism issues. In addition, the incumbent coordinates influenza surveillance through activities including the ILI net surveillance and other influenza surveillance mechanisms and assures accurate and timely reporting of county influenza activity to the State.

COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH INSPECTOR

This position conducts investigations of work environments to determine if safety and health requirements are being met.  They educate the public about the regulatory requirements for public health and safety and socialize best practices for reducing hazardous conditions in publicly accessible areas.



  • Inspect public places and work sites.   Inspect and monitor food safety in food premises.  Write up reports for each visit.

  • Take samples from sites to test for environmental pollution.

  • Host workshops and talks to discus public health matters.

  • Make proposals to management about adjustments to the work place.

This is a highly responsible and independent position functioning in a multi-county geographical area under the general supervision of the Environmental Administrator. The incumbent is responsible for technical, surveillance, investigative, analytical and programmatic work involving food and waterborne disease outbreak epidemiology. In addition, the incumbent should have a thorough knowledge of the scientific literature pertaining to food and waterborne disease epidemiology and actual experience in outbreak investigations.


Works cooperatively as the food and waterborne outbreak epidemiologist in a multi-county area of the state. Leads or provides technical assistance in the investigation of suspected food and waterborne disease outbreaks in response to a county health department’s request, including data collection, sample collection, evaluation, analysis and interpretation of results, and preparation of preliminary and final reports of investigative findings. Reviews existing and devises new active and passive food and waterborne disease surveillance systems and recommends actions to enhance reporting. Develops protocols in cooperation with county health departments and the Bureau of Environmental Epidemiology.


Develops, maintains and provides analyses of a computer-based data system in order to track incidence, prevalence, risk factors and trends of food and waterborne diseases. Provides timely statistical reports of cases, surveillance, investigations and other related data.


Serves as the training coordinator for food and waterborne disease epidemiology to include investigative methods, protocols, interview techniques, data source and statistical analyses, as well as proper collection and submission of specimens for laboratory analysis. Provides selective training and consultation to county health department staff, various other staff within the Department of Health, the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, and other appropriate state agencies and community groups.
